Hockey Development Committee Welcome Letter

On behalf of the Minnetonka High School Boys and Girls Hockey programs and MYHA Hockey Development Committee, we thank you for being a coach!

There is no asset more important to the health and future of our association than having fantastic coaches.   Since you are the direct and constant connection to the players, you are the ones with the most influence on them.  We believe that we are fortunate to have this opportunity to spend time serving these kids. Along with this opportunity comes great responsibility.  We can all remember some of the coaches / teachers / mentors that made impacts in our own lives.  We can remember people in those roles that were positive and life changing and some that were actually negative.   It is not easy and it is far more than teaching kids to skate, pass and shoot.  Every kid comes without an instruction manual, comes from a different parenting style, bring different levels of interest, athletic ability, drive, and hours on their blades.  Some kids have confidence beyond their skills and some have unbelievable skills with a lack of confidence.
This is also what makes coaching so fun and rewarding.  Coaching is about relationships.
Your coaching staff is responsible for teaching the life skills of teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, competition, hard work, respect, and perseverance.  Your staff also is responsible for creating a safe place for every kid on your team to come and have fun and positive experience on and off the ice.
Our whole group of coaches past and present make up our “Coaches Team”
Over the years we have decided that we too should put into practice what we expect the kids to do.  Keep learning and strive to be better at what we do.  We need to be asking all of the people that would make great coaches to get involved. We would like to keep improving our coaches training and support.  Be more consistent throughout our coaching program from team to team at all age levels. Continually work to create the very best practices and communicate these to each other.  Have fun!
Years from now a child you coached will see you at the rink.  How will they remember you?

Coach Johnson Welcome Letter

“Someday I would like to be remembered as a person who was a lifelong learner.” Bonnie Johnson

Bonnie is my mom, and is a person who has taught me some great life lessons, and a person who I continue to gain a great deal of inspiration from.
I’ve been involved in coaching since 1996, and I can humbly say that every year behind the bench has been a learning experience.
Last season 08/09 I had the opportunity to coach a HDC clinic with the U12B & U12A teams. Before we hit the ice, I asked all the players from both teams to gather in one locker room and share what they had learned through playing the sport of hockey. These are their answers that I wrote down, word for word:

“Encourage other players – don’t put the down / Be there for someone – if a teammate falls or gets hurt /
Respect all players / Try hard to be your best / Don’t brag if you are better than somebody else /
Be Committed / Be out there – Take a risk / Identity – being a Tonka Hockey Player / Have fun /
Include everyone / Teamwork / Cooperation / Effort – Accountable to team /
Manage time w/ homework and school / Good Sportsmanship / Respect Coaches, Other Teams, & Refs /
Be competitive / Celebrate w/ your teammates / Be willing to accept failure /
Congratulate teammate that does something good / Willing to put in the practice / Work / Discipline
Make Friends / Have Confidence / Believe in yourself / Do not give up / Try your hardest”
-          Minnetonka U12B & U12A players, January 2009

Our coaching staff posted these comments in our Tonka Girls HS hockey locker room as a perspective and reminder to our team of what playing such a great team sport is about.
Several of you have coached those wise U12 players in the past and passed along some of those great lessons. As we enter into this season I ask that you keep these lessons in mind as a reminder of our positions as role models and how we can help these players learn valuable life lessons through the sport of hockey.

At today’s coaching clinic you will receive two important pieces of information: the MYHA Coaches Agreement and the Tonka Hockey Coaches Plan for practices. The Coaches Agreement outlines our intentions as coaches to act as positive role models and to help give each youth player the best possible opportunity to succeed in hockey and in life at the next level. The Coaches Plan for practice is a model that we would like all coaches to follow in an effort to improve our Tonka Hockey Players skills of Skating Ability, Game Concepts, and Competitive Drive. I look forward to putting these materials to use this season with my high school staff. In doing so I believe that the X’s and O’s are more easily taught and we can focus more attention on the life lessons of effort, attitude, relationships, teamwork. On behalf of the Tonka Girls HS Hockey Team, I wish you the best of luck on your journey this season and look forward to seeing you at the rink!

Sincerely,

Eric Johnson

-          2009 Classic Lake Conference Champions
Individual Accomplishments:
-          Eric Peterson receiving a scholarship to play at Bentley University
-          Nate Jensen and Sam Coatta competing in the USHL
-          Anthony Raiola receiving a scholarship to play at UMASS Amherst
-          Jake Gardiner awarded metro player of the year and a Mr. Hockey Finalist, receiving a scholarship to play at Wisconsin and drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round

I’m so proud of the strides our youth program has made. We have created an association that is truly envied around the state of Minnesota. I believe we need to continue our efforts to develop an environment that gives our youth an opportunity to excel in hockey and in life.
At today’s coaching clinic you will receive two important pieces of information: the MYHA Coaches Agreement and the Tonka Hockey Coaches Plan for practices. Keep up the hard work and remember we are developing young men not just hockey players!
