“Someday I would like to be remembered as a person who was a lifelong learner.” Bonnie Johnson
Bonnie is my mom, and is a person who has taught me some great life lessons, and a person who I continue to gain a great deal of inspiration from.
I’ve been involved in coaching since 1996, and I can humbly say that every year behind the bench has been a learning experience.
Last season 08/09 I had the opportunity to coach a HDC clinic with the U12B & U12A teams. Before we hit the ice, I asked all the players from both teams to gather in one locker room and share what they had learned through playing the sport of hockey. These are their answers that I wrote down, word for word:
“Encourage other players – don’t put the down / Be there for someone – if a teammate falls or gets hurt /
Respect all players / Try hard to be your best / Don’t brag if you are better than somebody else /
Be Committed / Be out there – Take a risk / Identity – being a Tonka Hockey Player / Have fun /
Include everyone / Teamwork / Cooperation / Effort – Accountable to team /
Manage time w/ homework and school / Good Sportsmanship / Respect Coaches, Other Teams, & Refs /
Be competitive / Celebrate w/ your teammates / Be willing to accept failure /
Congratulate teammate that does something good / Willing to put in the practice / Work / Discipline
Make Friends / Have Confidence / Believe in yourself / Do not give up / Try your hardest”
- Minnetonka U12B & U12A players, January 2009
Our coaching staff posted these comments in our Tonka Girls HS hockey locker room as a perspective and reminder to our team of what playing such a great team sport is about.
Several of you have coached those wise U12 players in the past and passed along some of those great lessons. As we enter into this season I ask that you keep these lessons in mind as a reminder of our positions as role models and how we can help these players learn valuable life lessons through the sport of hockey.
At today’s coaching clinic you will receive two important pieces of information: the MYHA Coaches Agreement and the Tonka Hockey Coaches Plan for practices. The Coaches Agreement outlines our intentions as coaches to act as positive role models and to help give each youth player the best possible opportunity to succeed in hockey and in life at the next level. The Coaches Plan for practice is a model that we would like all coaches to follow in an effort to improve our Tonka Hockey Players skills of Skating Ability, Game Concepts, and Competitive Drive. I look forward to putting these materials to use this season with my high school staff. In doing so I believe that the X’s and O’s are more easily taught and we can focus more attention on the life lessons of effort, attitude, relationships, teamwork. On behalf of the Tonka Girls HS Hockey Team, I wish you the best of luck on your journey this season and look forward to seeing you at the rink!
Sincerely,
Eric Johnson
